Enlisting students that are passionate about the potential of data visualization to spark insight. It is that magical moment we live for: an unwieldy, unyielding data set is transformed into an image on the screen, and suddenly the user can perceive an unexpected pattern. In recent years, we have become acutely aware that the visualizations and the sparks they generate, take on new value in a social setting. Visualization is a catalyst for discussion and collective insight about data. /// View Work

We will conduct research to understand these needs and wants and how they can be facilitated with design and technology as they are applied to a screen-based interactive experience. The world wide web is a constantly evolving medium. It is from this perspective that we will explore the many topics of design including color, typography, conceptual thinking, imagery, composition, usability, and accessibility. /// View Work

"Low Tech to High Tech"... Students create a movie poster, campaign, and title/trailor sequence for a film drawn from a list of contemporary and classic independent cinema.

The goal is to communicate the ambience, mood, concepts, and emotions of the film through its graphic representation. The poster should tell the audience something about the film. No headshots, no star names, no Saul Bass rip-offs. Complexity, multiple narratives, suitability, and controlled hierarchy are among the major issues discussed.

Students create a title/trailor sequence of at least sixty seconds in the same visual style as their posters. An emphasis is placed on typography in motion, as well as image-based footage. /// View Work

  • ///EARL///by Brad McNally, Jesse Penico, Rick Lange 8.7.09 (adobe finalist)

EARL is a boomark comparative and analytical website. Society tends to label everything it can. In the simplest of terms, in the most convenient of language, from the clothes we wear the food we eat to the person we are; we all wear labels. But if a person is greater than the sum total of our parts, how can a label accurately describe who we really are?

The goal of our project is to illustrate exactly how complex or simple a person can be, and our relation-ship to others by illustrating our personal preferences through documentation of our favorite URLs. /// View project

  • ///IHeartConsumption///by jon rodriguez 12.10.08

Living in a materialistically driven society, it is almost impossible to avoid commercial advertisements. Commercial content is strategically placed in our sight and into our consciousness whether we are in a public place or in the comfort of our homes. Bright color schemes and catchy slogans are used to convince us that the product being sold will provide instant gratification. This vicious yet captivating approach works so effectively that people will camp outside stores, for days, to be the first to own the latest Apple product. There is no doubt that the general public underestimates the power of words, imagery, and their impact on our daily lives. The overall objective of my campaign is to encourage the individual to question their personal motives, as well as the intentions of governing entities that are influencing our every day perceptions. /// View more

  • ///music minus art equals death///by Jesse Penico 12.10.08

Over the past several years, we have seen an appreciation of art in music decline. This is especially true with print design, as well as with the music itself. This depreciation is mostly happening with younger generations who acquire music over the Internet, legally or illegally. We need to bring a strong emphasis back to the artistic side of music, not only with the actual art, but also with the music itself.

Music Minus Art Equals Death (MMAED) wants to make this happen, whether it be by having group discussions on music design (album artwork, posters, merchandise, ect.), music itself, or music-oriented designers/studios.

I hoping this will spark a larger interest in music design and help save art in music from being completely lost. /// View more
